Progressives, of course, scoff at such notions. For progressives, these concerns are merely a cover that gay-hating, transgender-hating religious fanatics want to use to roll back all the “progress” that has been made. And yet, the last few years have made it clear that the slippery slope is real, and we are steadily sliding down it.

A small group of adventurous American soldiers in Iraq at the end of the Gulf War are determined to steal a huge cache of gold reputed to be hidden somewhere near their desert base. Finding a map they believe will take them to the gold, they embark on a journey that leads to unexpected discoveries, enabling them to rise to a heroic challenge that drastically changes their lives. As the years passed, traditions became increasingly embellished. By the 3 rd century, they were viewed as kings. By the 6 th century they had names: Bithisarea, Melichior, and Gathaspa. Some even associated them with Shem, Ham and Japheth, the three sons of Noah, and thus with Asia, Africa, and Europe. A 14 th -century Armenian tradition identifies them as Balthasar, King of Arabia; Melchior, King of Persia; and Gasper, King of India. These are all very interesting traditions, but what do we really know about the Magi?
